Weight Loss (Obesity)
By Steven Horne, RH (AHG) & Kimberly Balas, ND
See also Hyperthyroid, Sugar Cravings and Hyperinsulinemia (Metabolic Syndrome)

For years, the weight loss mantra has been, "eat less, exercise more." Yet, the research shows that 90% of the people who lose weight in this manner simply gain it back. Why is this so?
Well, for starters, appetite, metabolism and mood are all controlled by messenger chemicals in the body. When you restrict calories, the cells of the body assume that there is a "famine" going on. In response, cells send chemical messengers that reduce metabolism (the rate at which you burn calories). This conserves the body's energy during the "famine."

Because your metabolism is lower, your energy is reduced, so you become less physically active. Your mood also changes because you feel deprived, so your body is attracted to foods that enhance mood, particularly carbohydrates. When food is available, other chemical messengers are released to stimulate the appetite and program the body to store energy (fat) in preparation for the next famine. Thus, a vicious cycle of "feast" and "famine" ensues.

In addition, fat itself acts like a gland, secreting its own chemical messengers. One Of these is a hormone called leptin. Leptin is supposed to increase your metabolism and reduce your appetite. However, inflammation blocks the action of leptin. Weight can also cause leptin resistance, much like insulin resistance causes type II diabetes.

Inflammation is very common in most Americans because of the large quantity of chemicals in our food, water and air. Inflammation causes fluid retention, and since it is very common for Americans to have intestinal inflammation, it's very common to have excess fluid and fat in the abdominal area. Since a gallon of water weighs eight pounds, it is very easy to have 5-15 pounds of excess water stored in the tissues of the body.

One can see that unless one changes the type of chemical messages being sent by the cells, one is fighting a losing (or "gaining") battle. Conversely, by getting our cells sending the right chemical messages, we can increase energy, reduce appetite, enhance mood and have a better functioning immune system.

"This thing is lightning in a bottle; it's a miracle flower to fight your fat" – Dr. Oz

Video Credit:
Dr. Oz has not endorsed any specific product, only the ingredient Safflower.

US National Library of Medicine (National Institutes of Health).
"In a double-blind crossover trial, daily supplementation with CLA oil (6.4 g CLA isomers—approximately equal amounts of c9t11-CLA and t10c12-CLA) for 16 weeks significantly reduced BMI and total adipose mass compared with safflower oil in 35 obese postmenopausal women (BMI >30) with type 2 diabetes [74]. "

According to Dr. Oz, Safflower works in more than one way. The first way is that it goes in and causes the body to burn fat from within “like a furnace,” literally melting the fat away. The second feature, and the most important one, is that after Safflower has burnt the fat, you’re left with the sleek, lean muscle that was buried underneath. The third feature is its ability to strengthen not only the muscles, but the bones as well.

There are basic keys to achieving this goal.

1. Start with an Attitude Adjustment
There is a simple, but powerful principle—whatever we focus our mental energy on, we tend to create. If one is constantly thinking negative things about oneself, or one's body, these thoughts will both create and perpetuate health problems, including excess weight. Most people hate certain things about themselves and their bodies. For instance, they may not like their stomach, or their thighs, or their complexion. Even actresses and models who are considered the epitome of beauty have these kinds of issues, and often abuse their bodies trying to achieve some unrealistic image of perfection.

Mentally and emotionally, we associate being "wrong" with the need to be "punished." So negative attitudes about the body cause us to want to punish the body for being "wrong." This is why many people are driven to unhealthy diet or exercise regimes in trying to achieve the ideal image of weight and beauty. Real beauty comes from health and inner happiness. It radiates from within as a glowing complexion, sparkling clear eyes and a happy countenance.

If you stop and think about it, the biggest reason people "pig out" on junk food (or acquire any other bad habit, for that matter) is because they are unhappy. Being unhappy sends the wrong chemical messages to your cells. so, "beating yourself up" mentally and emotionally for being overweight is only going to perpetuate the problem.

Conversely, it has been scientifically documented that pleasurable experiences (such as loving relationships, laughter, enjoyable activities, time spent in nature, etc.) cause the body to send out chemical messages that reduce inflammation, enhance immunity, promote healing, improve metabolism and otherwise enhance health and well-being. In fact, the biggest single factor in having a long and healthy life isn't your weight, your diet or your exercise level—it's your attitude. People who experience pleasure in life live longer, healthier lives.

So, instead of being hard on yourself, be gentle with yourself and find ways to experience pleasure in your life. Do things that help you find joy and fulfillment. Furthermore, enjoy your food! Make a decision to enjoy whatever you decide to eat (even if it is not the healthiest food). This means taking time to notice the color, aroma, texture and taste of each bite. It also means eating your food slowly and chewing it thoroughly. A good way to train yourself to do this is to put your fork or spoon down after each bite and take some nice deep breaths while chewing. If you just do this, you'll automatically eat less and feel more satisfied.

Remember that all healing, including losing weight, is inherently about love and nurturing, not fear and deprivation. So, as hard as it may be, start changing your self talk. Keep a journal and write down your feelings about yourself and your body. Then, start affirming that you love yourself, and that you are loving and caring for your body.

2. Instead of focusing on calories, focus on selecting healthy food

The single biggest reason why so many Americans are overweight and sick is because we are eating refined and processed foods. These foods are lacking in vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other phytonutrients the body is looking to obtain from food. When we eat these foods, we may be getting enough calories, but we still feel hungry because the body is still looking for the nutrition it needs.

Refined sugars (sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, etc.), white flour, polished rice, processed vegetable oils, margarine, shortening and just about all processed and packaged foods fall into this category. If you want to lose weight and be healthy, you must start eliminating these foods from your diet and replacing them with whole, natural, nutrient-rich, unprocessed foods. When you do so, your body will get the nutrition it needs and stop telling you it is hungry.

Of course, if you focus on the negative (what you shouldn't be eating) you'll never succeed. The way to succeed is to start incorporating more whole, natural foods into your diet. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits (with a greater emphasis on vegetables that are not starchy). Choose good sources of protein for your blood type and eat high quality protein and vegetables as your primary food source. Go easy on grains (bread, pasta, etc.) and only use whole grains when you do eat grains. Eat high quality fats, too. Eat the foods that are good for you first and your body will start craving the good foods while your desire for the "junk" foods will diminish.

3. Eat small, but balanced meals on a regular basis
Here is a guaranteed recipe for gaining weight, even on good food. Skip breakfast and eat a big meal right before going to bed. This puts your blood sugar on a roller-coaster and results in a daily famine-feast cycle. You aren't hungry in the morning, so you don't eat. Your body, thinking it is starving sends messengers to lower your metabolism and energy level throughout the day. By night, your body is starving, and you eat too much. However, since you are inactive (going to sleep), the body stores the excess calories for tomorrow's"famine."

To change this cycle, always "break your fast" by eating something for breakfast. Always start the day with some quality fat and protein. For example: avocado, meat, whole milk yogurt with fruit, nuts or oatmeal with butter or cream (not sugar). This sets your metabolism to start burning fat instead of storing it. When you eat carbohydrates for breakfast, you raise insulin levels, which prompts the body to store fat. Starting off with a meal that contains fat and protein, not just carbs, kicks a hormone called glucagon into action which mobilizes stored sugars.

Then, whenever you feel a little bit hungry during the day, eat a healthy snack such as nuts, fruit, organic cheese, fresh vegetables, tuna, a salad, etc. By eating small, regular meals your body realizes there's no more famine and will start adjusting your appetite accordingly. You won't be so hungry at night and won't overeat at bedtime. You will feel better and these meals will help you lose weight.

4. Get Physically Active
Forty-eight million Americans are considered sedentary, which contributes directly to obesity. Being sedentary means one does not get enough exercise to maintain health.

Almost every system of the body is affected by exercise. Exercise tones the heart, which is a muscle and needs exercise just as much as all other muscles do. It also increases the body's ability to use oxygen, raises the amount of blood pumping through the body, decreases blood pressure, lubricates the joints and makes the body function better in the use and storing of calories. This means better health and less excess body fat.

Don't worry. This doesn't mean you have to go to the gym. Chose physical activities that you enjoy such as swimming, riding a bike, playing a sport, gardening or hiking. Just getting out and taking a walk every day is helpful. You can also consider yoga or tai chi, as these exercises also help reduce stress. Resistance exercise (such as weight lifting) helps increase weight loss because muscle tissue burns more calories than fat. So consider doing at least a little bit of weight lifting.

5. Correct Underlying Health Problems
Part of the secret to weight loss is to identify some of the specific health issues that may be inhibiting your ability to lose weight. These can then be corrected with appropriate supplements or lifestyle changes. Consult a local natural health professional to help you create a program that is custom-tailored for you, but here are a few of the most important problems to consider.

Low Thyroid
The body burns fat in order to stay warm and the gland that sends the chemical messages to burn that fat is the thyroid. Low thyroid is extremely common, especially among women, and can result in weight gain, fatigue, depression, cold hands and feet and dry skin. If you have any of these symptoms, consider supporting your thyroid.

If lab tests show you have normal levels of thyroid hormones, but you still exhibit symptoms of low thyroid, you may have a problem with conversion of T4 (the inactive form of the thyroid hormone) to T3, the active form. 7-Keto, a metabolite of DHEA can be very helpful in this case, as it increases the conversion of T4 to T3, which increases metabolic rate and increases fat metabolism.

Toxicity and Inflammation
Toxins contribute to weight gain in two ways. First, toxins cause inflammation and inflammation causes fluid retention in the tissues. The rapid weight loss most people experience at the beginning of any diet program or cleanse is typically due to a reduction of inflammation and fluid retention.

The second reason toxins contribute to weight gain has to do with the fact that many toxins we're exposed to are fat-soluble. So, if the body can't break them down, it stores them in fat. It may also increase cholesterol levels to transport them. The body will not release the fat if it cannot deal with the toxins.

This is why learning to eat natural foods is critical to weight loss. Not only are natural foods free of the chemical additives found in processed foods, they also contain more vitamins and minerals to break down toxins. It also explains why a cleanse can help a person lose weight.

Dieter's Cleanse is a convenient prepackaged, cleansing program that can be helpful for anyone trying to lose weight. It not only contains herbs that promote detoxification and reduce fluid retention in the tissues, it also contains herbs that help balance hormones and metabolism. Be aware that most of the weight lost on a cleanse is not fat, it is simply water retained in the tissues from inflammation. It is not uncommon for people to lose 5-10 pounds on a cleanse, but the loss of fat proceeds more slowly (about one to two pounds per week).

Adding fiber to the diet is another way to increase weight loss. Fiber binds toxins for removal and results in a feeling of fullness that reduces appetite. Psyllium Hulls Combination or Fat Grabbers are good choices for helping with weight loss. Be sure to take fiber supplements with plenty of water.

Stress and unresolved emotional issues can also contribute to weight gain. Many people eat to feed emotional needs. Stress also releases hormones from the adrenals like cortisol, which causes a breakdown of muscle tissue and can contribute to creating fat deposits. Stress can also cause a release of other chemicals which create food cravings and otherwise upset the body's biochemistry.

Keeping an emotional journal where you can write down your feelings when you are having the desire to eat junk food or otherwise fail to take care of your body, can help you identify and fulfill your real emotional needs. Cravings for sugar and sweets often signals a lack of joy or "sweetness" in one's life. Finding ways to bring more joy into your life can help fulfill those emotional needs in more constructive ways.

Supplements that help you deal with stress more effectively can also be beneficial. These include Nature's Cortisol, which helps reduce stress levels and inhibits excess cortisol production. This can be particularly helpful where there is abdominal fat due to stress. Along with Nature's Cortisol, other options are Nutri-Calm and Adrenal Support. These also help reduce stress levels. Nutri-Calm helps a person who is always running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, while Adrenal Support can rebuild the adrenals of those who are "burned-out" and addicted to stimulants like caffeine.

Depression may also be involved in weight problems and food cravings. 5-HTP can help increase serotonin levels, which can reduce appetite and improve mood. Remember that cortisol is also released in response to chronic inflammation, so a supplement like Thai-Go that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can also help to reduce cortisol output. Reducing inflammation also increases metabolism and helps leptin, the fat burning hormone, work more efficiently.

Food cravings
Sometimes, it seems that food cravings are our worst enemy when trying to change our diet. Therefore, supplements that reduce appetite or specific food cravings may also be helpful as part of a weight loss program. Garcinia Combination boosts metabolism. Stixated helps with sugar cravings and hunger.

Cravings for sugar are signs of blood sugar problems and usually indicate that the diet is lacking fat and protein. Licorice Root and Super Algae are two supplements that can control blood sugar levels and reduce the cravings for sweets. Addiction to sugar and other simple carbohydrates is a big problem for some people, so it is also helpful to substitute a healthier form of sweets.
