Uterine Fibroids
By Steven Horne, RH (AHG) & Kimberly Balas, ND

See also Fibrosis

Fibroids are abnormal growths of connective tissue, usually benign, that are found in the uterus or breast. Fibroids may form as large elevated scars after large infected wounds. Excess levels of estrogen in the body usually cause fibroids. High levels of estrogen are often the result of xenoestrogens found in pesticides and plastics.

Symptoms of uterine fibroids include heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal bloating, menstrual cramps, and spottting between periods. Anemia may result from loss of blood, and there may be abdominal pain, pain during intercourse, painful urination, or constipation. Since symptoms are often obscure, it is important to get an accurate medical diagnosis.

Factors that increase the risk of uterine fibroids are too much caffeine and too much fat in the diet, deficiencies of essential fatty acids, hormone imbalances, underactive thyroid, birth control pills and X-rays. Obesity and family history of fibroids further increase the tendency for them to develop.

Commercial meat and dairy products typically contain hormones that aggravate fibroids. Soft plastic containers (like plastic milk bottles) leech xenoestrogens into food that contribute to fibroids. Pesticide residues on commercially grown produce also stimulate estrogen receptor sites and aggravate the condition. Coffee contributes heavily to fibroid growth. All of these should be avoided or eliminated.

Progesterone cream (Resolve) massaged into the abdomen may help by shifting the balance between estrogen and progesterone.

Yarrow
has been helpful in breaking up fibroids in many cases. Matthew Wood, a professional herbalist, has cleared up many cases of uterine fibroids with this herb alone.

Fibroids can be related to congestion in the liver, so a liver cleanse may be of help. Cellular Detox is another formula that may be of help here. The liver is responsible for breaking down and eliminating excess estrogen in the system.

The uterus helps the body metabolize fats and having it removed can cause permanent problems with fat metabolism, which can lead to weight and heart problems. A woman's uterus serves many important functions and she should do her best to keep it her entire life. Using some of the remedies described here, it is possible to get rid of uterine fibroids without having a hysterectomy.
