Tortuous medical practices of 200 years ago brought disgust to one medical doctor who was trained in the "healing practice" of using poisons like mercury, arsenic and strychnine to purge disease from the body. This doctor was to become world-famous for devising a new method which would not only enhance normal body processes to effect real healing, but would also do it without harmful side effects.

Persecution and ridicule did not stop Samuel Hahneman from leaving his regular medical practice and initiating a series of lengthy experiments to eventually prove the power of his medical invention. He called his discovery homeopathy-homeo meaning similar and pathy, disease.

The theory behind homeopathy is that a substance (herb, mineral, etc.) which creates certain symptoms in a healthy person will relieve those same symptoms in a sick person when taken in a smaller dose. Homeopaths express this in concept in the phrase "like cures like."

The reasons why this approach works are not fully understood, but it does work! That's why the use of homeopathic medicines has continued to expand, and is currently leaping into popularity. Many medications are designed to suppress or fight disease symptoms. This explains why Hahneman called orthodox medicine allopathy ”meaning contrary to, or against the disease".

The problem is that when drugs suppress one symptom, they often create others in the form of side-effects. That's why it seems that there is a never-ending stream of new prescriptions that are needed to combat the side-effects of previous medications. These, in turn, may cause their own set of unpleasant symptoms.

Homeopathic physicians are usually medical doctors who obtain their education in homeopathy on their own. Homeopathic physicians spend a great deal of time getting to know the patient. They make careful notes about ALL of the patient's symptoms and endeavor to find the remedy which most closely matches their individual pattern of symptoms. They also keep good records of any changes brought about by the treatment. It is a very thorough and time-consuming method. For minor ailments, however, a lay person can treat himself with homeopathic medicines without fear of harm, because homeopathic medicines do not have toxic side-effects. These medicines are recognized as safe by the federal government and are considered OTC (sold over-the-counter without prescription) drugs.

For relatively little cost, a person with a known ailment may purchase a homeopathic tincture and medicate himself with it by simply following instructions on the label. Homeopathic medications work best when taken alone. Take them at least half an hour before or after taking other food, herbs or supplements.

The whole idea is to turn the symptoms, which are produced by the body and not the disease, into a reflection of the medicine needed. When the cause of the disease is overcome by the potency of the homeopathic or nutritional supplements the body needs, the symptoms merely cease to exist. It is important to remember true healing remedies do not cover up the symptoms, nor is the body's power to express the symptom diminished. The symptom, in the case of homeopathy, only disappears because the body has been cured!

Famous people who have used homeopathic remedies include Mahatma Gandhi of India, famous philosopher William James, financier John D. Rockefeller, and Yehudi Menuhin (violinist extraordinaire) and the Queen of England, who always has a homeopathic physician on her staff.

So you'll be in first class company when you chose to use homeopathic remedies.
