About Betty Lou

Although Betty Lou didn't recognize it then, her business had its birth almost 38 years ago.

"I have always believed that there is a connection between what we eat and how we feel.

Everyone wants to feel their best, and when I decided to remove refined sugar from my family's diet over 30 years ago, I began creating recipes that were made with honey and brown rice syrup instead. Children know what they like, and my sons were my very first taste-testers. As I fine-tuned the recipes my boys' friends took notice, and soon I had the most popular yard in the neighborhood! I was like the mom with Kool-Aid(tm) in the TV commercial.

I chose "Just Great Stuff... and Plenty of it!" as our motto because it truly reflects the dedication that we have to the quality of our products. I always use the best, healthiest, cutting edge ingredients because I believe that they taste better and make you feel better.

A few notes about snacks

Even though snacking has developed a "bad image," snacks can be an important part of your diet. They can provide energy in the middle of the day or when you exercise. A healthy snack between meals can also decrease your hunger and keep you from overeating at meal time.

Healthy Snacks can even be included in a weight loss plan. The trick is to choose a snack with about 100 calories and a mix of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats. Aim to eat your snack about halfway between meals to keep energy levels consistent.

Snacking is important for children because their smaller stomachs fill up fast and they burn energy quickly. Between meals, snacks give their growing bodies the nutrients and hydration they need.

According to research from Mintel, “… nearly all Americans (94 percent) snack at least once a day. What is more, half (50 percent) of adults snack two to three times per day with 70 percent agreeing that anything can be considered a snack these days.” (Note from Four Winds Nutrition: That is why we think it is important to offer on this site a variety of Healthy Snacks!)

Additionally, Oxygen reports that, “Research shows that eating the right combination of nutrients in these small meals can enhance gym performance, fat-burning, muscle-building and recovery.” They also cite a study in the British Journal of Nutrition showing that those who ate a high-protein snack an hour before lunch ate less at lunchtime (or at their next meal). They also state that, for those who get really sleepy around 3pm, eating a fiber-rich snack two hours after lunch will help curb that tiredness and make them feel more awake. Lastly, Oxygen reports that, if you are truly hungry after an active day, you should have a snack made of high-quality protein. Our muscles are repaired during sleep, and protein-rich snacks can provide the necessary amino acids for proper repair to take place.

To boost focus, choose snacks full of antioxidants and healthy fats. A trail mix including almonds, dried berries, and dark chocolate would be a delicious way to promote mental acuity throughout the day, nurturing productivity and efficiency while keeping palates happy.
