RUE Extract
Ruta graveolens
Classifications: Antispasmodic, carminative, emmenagogue, sedative,
stimulant, stomachic.
Parts Used: Flowering tops.
Historical Uses:
Rue has been used as an insect repellents and in folk medicine
as an antispasmodic, a sedative, and to stimulate the onset of
menses.
Rue is said to strengthen eye muscles and improve vision.
In New Mexico, Rue has traditionally been employed to treat ailments
such as muscle stiffness and pains, dizziness and headache, tightness
in the stomach and for problems of the inner ear.
It has also served in cases of glandular enlargements, sprains,
aching tendons, tennis elbows, damage joints, and carpal tunnel
syndrome.
Externally, Rue has served in cases of rheumatism, gout, and sciatica.
It is reputed useful in cases of whooping cough and croupy affections.
Contraindications: Avoid
during pregnancy or in cases of uterine bleeding, painful
and excessive menstrual bleeding, stomach hyperacidity and low
blood pressure.
Adverse reactions: Avoid excessive use.
Dosage: 5 to 20 drops in water or juice before
meals.
For falling sickness, 40 drops in water or juice before meals.
For whooping cough in children, 1 to 5 drops in water or juice
every hour while awake.
Externally, rub as needed.
