A FEW NOTES ABOUT THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
 |
|
The nervous system is the body's main means of communication.
Neurons (nerve cells) generate nerve impulses that travel down axons from one cell to another.
Many nerve cells are insulated with myelin to speed up impulses and prevent cross firing.
Neurotransmitters are chemicals used to transmit impulses from one neuron to another.
The sympathetic nervous system initiates "fight-or-flight" reactions in response to stress. Fight-or-flight reactions result in elevated blood sugar, blood pressure, heart rate and metabolism.
The parasympathetic nervous system reciprocates the sympathetic nervous system to buffer stress.
Stress depletes our bodies' reserves of vitamins A, C, E and the B complex. Regular replenishment of these nutrients helps maintain optimal nervous system health.
