CROUP
By Louise Tenney

Croup can be a frightening condition for both the child the parent. It is an infection of the upper respiratory tract that causes constriction and narrowing of the larynx and cheast.
It is most often viral in nature.
Inflammation in the voice box and windpipe causes swelling and difficulty in breathing and talking, resulting in a brassy, bark-like cough. There is also a wheezing with the intake of air. The condition can be mild or severe.
Respiration usually appears to be low and rapid with the abdominal muscles pulling in as a breath is taken.

It is a common condition most often affecting children age three months to four years. The condition usually worsens at night. And croup, as with many viral infections, mostlly occurs in the late fall and winter.

Humidifying the air can help. Taking the child out into the cold air can temporarily relieve the problem. The child will probably prefer to sleep in a slightly upright position.

CAUSES
Croup is most often caused by a virus, but some serious cases may be bacterial in nature. Congestion and mucus may dry in the throat area causing difficulty in breathing. Croup can also be caused by a cold virus settling in the upper respiratory tract.
Cases of croup have been linked to allergies, air pollution and milk products.

HOME CARE
Use a cool mist humidifier in the child's room. A cool compress to the throat may control an attack.
Remain calm and reassuring to the child.
Bundle the child in a blanket and take the child outside for a few minutes if it is a cool night.
Have the child sleep in a slightly upright position.
Keep the child away from cigarette smoke.
Apply hot onion packs over the chest and back.

DIETARY GUIDELINES
Avoid dairy products and mucus forming foods.
Give children ample liquids such as citrus juices, herbal teas, and warm vegetable broth. This helps to loosen the mucus.
