Burns vary in degree as to their severity and seriousness. First degree burns will cause redness, mild swelling and pain. Second degree bums will cause redness and blistering. Third degree cause destruction of the skin and underlying muscle tissue. Little pain occurs because the nerve endings are destroyed.
Small children should be supervised at all times to avoid the possibility of a burn injury.
CAUSES
Burns range from mild to charring with destruction of all layers of the skin. Any time the skin surface is in contact with heat, a bum may occur. Even the sun can cause burning. A sunburn can be serious and exposure to the sun should be gradual and sunscreen is advised.
Steam, fire and chemical burns can all cause serious damage. Children should be supervised at all times around hot surfaces. A small child can accidentally turn on the hot water if left alone or pull a hot pan from the stove, causing serious injury.
First degree burns usually result from the sun or hot water.
Second degree burns usually occur from hot metal objects, flame contact or severe sunburns.
Third degree burns are the result of high flame contact, hot fluid burns, steam from a pressure cooker, X-rays, and electrical burns which can cause death.
Fourth degree burns can cause total destruction of the skin and can also destroy organic bodily functions and may be fatal.
Cold water should be applied until the pain has subsided.
Cold water can help stop the burning process and may prevent blistering. Clothes that cover the burn should not be removed but soaked to prevent further burning. Blisters should not be broken because they offer protection from infection to the delicate skin tissue.
